  • How Superior Mobility Chairs Could Benefit You

More Aussies are investing in mobility aids and recliner chairs but are they worthwhile or simply a mancave necessity? In this post, we explain why a mobility lift recliner chair from Superior Lifestyle is your next best health investment. Written by Sid, Sleep Specialist, 12 August 2020 I know I'm not the only one who is prone to sleeping in the movies or in front of the TV. If you're vertically challenged, you might even find you can get comfortable sleeping on a plane. For the rest of us, economy class is simply a brutal reminder of how much difference a couple of inches could make. If you've ever wondered why reclining your car seat or laying in a hamock is so comfortable, keep reading. The answer lies in our anatomy and in this post, we'll explore how our mobility lift recliner chairs can make all the difference to your quality of life. Does sleeping flat do more damage than good? For centuries, it has made sense to lie down flat and fall asleep. Not only does this help to slow down our heart rate, it also allows our spines to decompress after a long day of twists and turns. Our ancestors did not have the luxury of sleeping in a mobility lift recliner chair... but if they did, we can't help but wonder, would there be less barriers to getting a quality night's sleep? Barriers like, for example, sleep apnoea, gastric reflux and sciatica: all health issues commonly resolved by repositioning the body. Whether or not flat beds are to blame, it's no secret that back problems are having a colossal impact on our productivity. "Low back pain is the leading cause of disability globally – with more than 540 million people affected by activity-limiting low back pain at any one time," (Monash University, 2018). According to a study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2018, around 16% of the population suffer from varying degrees of back pain. That equates to roughly 4 million Australians, who have been estimated by Monash University to spend $4.8 billion a year on managing the side effects of static posture. These statistics illustrate the importance of preventative measures that promote good posture all day and all night. Measures like, for example, our adjustable beds, pressure relieving mattresses and mobility lift recliner chairs, which are all Class IA Medical Devices listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (#307512). Band-aid solutions like paracetamol or aggravating massages, ought to be replaced with investments on your money. When you consider that 80% of us will suffer from some form of back pain during our lifetime, the benefits of a Superior Mobility Chair become glaringly obvious. But before we get into the nitty gritty, let's take a trip to the moon 🚀🌖 to better understand the human body. What is "Zero Gravity" anyway? In order to land on the moon, NASA's Space Engineers and Scientists had to research a substantial volume of the human body. One of their critical discoveries was the body's natural position in an environment with zero gravity, which effectively eliminates unnecessary strain on our bones, muscles and organs. The findings of this research have continued to inform engineers in multiple disciplines from automobiles and airplanes to office chairs and bed bases. It can be reduced to a simple equation: With this understanding, we can now explain the multitude of benefits from positional pain relief provided by Superior Mobility Chairs, during work, sleep and moments of self-care. Relieve body aches and pains If you picture your average daily routine, you'll probably find that you spend most of your day slouched infront of a computer or hunched over paperwork at your desk. You might spend another two hours or more watching television on the lounge, or driving to and from work. When we build such a routine, it is common for our spines to fall out of alignment. This places immense pressure on other bones, muscles and organs to support our weight. It is only natural in our sedentary society but can be mitigated with the help of our mobility lift recliner chairs. By lowering our upper body and elevating our legs, we can alter the direction of pressure on our bodies and effectively distribute our body mass. Our vertebrae are also afforded greater space to open and relax. In doing so, it encourages a neutral posture, eliminating any potential for muscle tension, stiffness or numbness. Put simply, our Superior Mobility Chairs help to create an ergonomic environment that is conducive to deep sleep, productivity and leisure. Improve your mobility and independence Our mobility lift recliner chairs also offer a solution to common health issues that hinder our mobility and independence. All too often, our customers tell us about the difficulty they experience trying to walk after being seated in one position. This is easily explained – being static and stiff for extended periods of time contributes to muscle stiffness and numbness. Not to mention, it can be quite embarrassing and a shot to our dignity having to depend on others. In our mission to eliminate unnecessary strain on our bodies, we have purposefully built our mobility lift recliner chairs to include a wide range of functions, including: flat or partial recline, flat leg elevation, thermo-heat therapy, full body vibration therapy, and lift up assist. Collectively, these features have empowered thousands of Australians to target common health issues ranging from leg cramps, varicose veins and lymphedema (swollen legs) to joint fatigue, osteoarthritis and bone degeneration. Simply turn on the thermo-heat pads, warm up your muscles and stimulate your body with a revitalising massage. In doing so, your body will engage in a light form of exercise, helping to maintain muscle tone and avoid injury. With the added power to lift the chair and exit your seat, our Superior Mobility Chairs offer the perfect solution for improving your mobility and maintaining your independence. Bolster your health and immunity Lastly, our mobility lift recliner chairs have proven to deliver physiological and neuromuscular benefits that cannot be understated. Supported by growing research into Whole Body Vibration (WBV), our Superior Mobility Chairs use advanced technology to encourage lymphatic drainage and bloster our immune system. It does so by using powerful vibration waves to move white blood cells around the body. White blood cells are known as the "cavalry" of the immune system, helping to remove debris from broken down cells and attack invading bacteria. In some instances, the increase in oxygen-rich blood flow will also cause a dramatic spike in the Human Growth Hormone (HGH). HGH is known to be the key ingredient in regeneration and cell repair. Whilst the body does a great job of removing toxins on its own, there are a variety of lifestyle factors that can prevent lymphatic drainage from happening on a regular basis. If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, you ought to consider vibration therapy as an effective means for detoxing the body: enlarged lymph nodes, onset fatigue, headaches, bloating or excess weight, soreness and stiffness (especially when you first wake up), or chronic colds or sinus infections. In a Superior Mobility Chair, your body will thank you for the immediate pressure relief and influx of vital nutrients to different areas of the body. Our Superior Mobility Chairs were designed for the sole purpose of relieving stress and enables this by cradling the body into a cushioned state of complete bliss and relaxation. How can we help? If you suffer from chronic pain, anxiety or stress, our Class IA Medical Devices listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods may offer you some genuine relief. Our adjustable beds, pressure relieving mattresses and mobility lift recliner chairs combine premium quality and the latest technology for positional pain-relief that actually works. • More Aussies turning to drugs to fall asleep

As the world grapples with the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, doctors and pharmacists are beginning to notice a worrying trend that could lead to a further loss of life. With many forced to stay home and endure the stress of mounting bills with a loss of income, prescriptions for anti-anxiety medication and sleeping pills have risen, prompting the need for caution around the abuse of drugs. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the stressors prompting an uptake in drugs and alcohol, and offer some healthier alternatives to managing stress and insomnia. Understanding the human mind Our bodies and minds have come a long way since the age of the caveman. From hunting for food and fighting with bears, to avoiding conversations and constantly comparing ourselves to others, the human mind has evolved to accommodate the sheer pace and complexity of modern life. As Dr. Russ Harris explains, our very existence has been intensified by this idea of a "never-ending to do list", making it extremely difficult to stop every once in a while and smell the roses. Coupled with the uncertainty and distress of the global pandemic and an economic downturn, it is no surprise that more and more Australians are turning to drugs to help switch off. “We know anecdotally in our community that people are hoarding prescription medicines...” said Leone Crayden, Chief Executive of The Buttery Rehabilitation Centre in Byron Bay, New South Wales. "It’s early days yet, but this is what is happening and I just hope governments are aware of it." Drugs aren't the only substance being abused either. According to a recent survey by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, a third of Australians are buying alcohol daily and approximately seventy per cent are consuming more alcohol than normal. The link between stress and substance abuse has been well established for many years, but insufficient awareness and action has led to an increasing number of deaths in Australia each year. Playing with fire It would be easy to presume that a drug or alcohol overdose would not happen to you, but the hard truth is that it can happen to anyone; from hoodlums and outcasts to conservatives and white-collar professionals. Last year, a report commissioned by public health organisation, the Penington Institute, revealed an alarming fourty per cent increase in the number of Australians dying from accidental drug overdose. The report goes on to say that sleep and anxiety pills are the second most common group found in accidential overdoses and that the subsequent number of deaths has doubled since 2008. "It's time to call this what it is: Australia's very own overdose crisis," said John Ryan, CEO of the Penington Instiute. "Make no mistake, it's a crisis that's getting worse." Australians are also being put on notice for their excessive alcohol consumption. In fact, a study of almost 80 years of health records, reveals that slashing our weekly intake of alcohol by five standard drinks could reduce the cancer death rate by 12% over 20 years. That equates to roughly 5,500 people a year! If this is any indication, Australians are seriously underestimating the danger of substance abuse and are urged to consider healthier alternatives for managing stress and sleep deprivation. Tips for managing insomnia and anxiety There are a variety of things we can do to curtail our dependency on drugs and alcohol, starting with a few lifestyle changes. According to clinical neurophsyiologist and sleep medicine specialist, Minesh Morker, poor sleep hygiene is extremely common for victims of insomnia and anxiety, but can be easily addressed. Simply turning off our mobile devices an hour or two before bed time, can make a significant difference as it encourages the production of melatonin (the hormone that aids sleep). Similarly, regular exercise during the day has proven to enhance our sleep quality on a level comparable to therapy and medication. It's also important to monitor your daily intake of sugar and saturated fats. A diet with high fibre is often recommended for victims of insomnia and may make all the difference to your quality of life. In many cases, the safest and most effective way to treat insomnia and anxiety will involve a combination of different therapies. How can we help? • 🏠 Working from home? How to increase your productivity 🧠

As the world navigates unchartered territory struck by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the rest of us lucky enough to have a job are getting adjusted to the new norm: working from home (WFH). If you're new to WFH, you might notice you tend to stay in bed until the last minute and spend the rest of the day in your pyjamas. Don't worry: you're only human and in this post we'll take a closer look into your internal body clock to find out how you can maximise your productivity. Whether you're a night owl or an early bird (or perhaps both), your "Circadian Rhythm" is in action and you ought to tune in so that you can unlock the very best version of yourself. Hack 1 - Monitor your body and adjust your schedule accordingly As the name suggests, the key is finding your rhythm. Each one of us are wired differently, so take a day or two to put your assumptions to the test. Do you notice a pattern in the way you tackle your day? Do you notice a period of time when you are feeling more attentive, sleepy or hungry? Do you prefer a few short breaks or one longer break? Subject to any employment agreement you have with your boss, you might want to experiment being more flexible and taking advantage of certain times when you're going to perform at your optimum. Check out the chart below and see how it applies to you. Around 10am, consider making the more important decisions as your cortisol hormone will be high and make you more alert. Hack 2 -Take yourself for a walk Keep it moving! Your legs are going to get restless sitting in just one spot and I know you miss those long walks to the local coffee shop 😉. Find the perfect time to pump those juices and come back to your laptop with relieved eyes and a breath of fresh air. If we analyse our internal body clock, we can see the direct impact of light or lack thereof. Therefore, the trick is to expose yourself to more sunlight. Give it a go when you start to dip in the afternoon and if it's a rainy day, make the extra effort because the odds are stacked against you. Hack 3 - Get a good night's sleep We are deeply passionate about sleep and the important role it plays in a wholesome and healthy lifestyle. The more sleep you get, the less you'll experience the peaks and troughs of your internal body clock. Not to mention, sleep is critical to the strength of your white blood cells. "There’s a significant body of research to show that immune function is tied closely to the body’s 24-hour circadian clock. When sleep is deprived, this cycle is weakened and disrupted, and the immune system suffers," (Michael J. Breus, PhD, 2012). If you're struggling to get the optimal 7-8 hours sleep (and that must be a good amount of you according to Deloitte Access Economics), call 1300 825 931 today and speak with one of our friendly Sleep Specialists. Hack 4 - Create an ergonomic environment Let's face it, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) will spark some dramatic shifts in behaviour and community values. Separating work from home life will be nearly impossible, which is why it's important to create an ergonomic environment conducive to work and performance. If you ask us, that means dual screen monitors, a wide desk, comfortable office chair and plenty of greenery with exposure to natural lighting. However, when it comes to ergonomics, one size truly does not fit all. If you find yourself with limited space and encroaching on your safe haven, you might find greater comfort with an adjustable bed that contours to your natural body shape and relieves tension at your pressure points. Coupled with revitalising vibration therapy, a Superior Lifestyle adjustable bed makes the perfect companion during these next few months of social distancing. Plus the more you invest in developing good sleep hygiene, the better your slumber will be and the better you'll feel. It makes perfect sense and in this current climate, it is our responsibility. Hack 5 - Keep a record of your home office expenses If anything is certain, it's that this "social distancing" protocol is likely to last for at least 6 months, which takes us to 1 September 2020. With the end of the financial year around the corner, it will be important to stay on top of things such as your home office expenses for tax deduction purposes. Whether you have a dedicated work area or not, don't let this current situation get on top of you. Start collating your receipts and be prepared to engage an accountant, sooner rather than later. About Superior Lifestyle We are deeply passionate about the power of sleep and have helped thousands of Australians overcome common sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, spinal injury and restless leg syndrome. Our electric beds, lift up recliner chairs and professional vibration therapy equipment are all listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (#307512) as Class IA Medical Devices and play a crucial role in the health and wellbeing of our customers. For more information about how you can benefit from an adjustable bed and pressure care mattress from Superior Lifestyle, call 1300 825 931 or email info@superiorlifestyle.com.au.

  • Can our adjustable beds help solve sleep apnea? 💤

Recent study confirms snoring and sleep apnea are hereditary 😴 For the first time, a new study by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute has identified more than 170 genes behind disrupted breathing during sleep. Led by Dr Miguel Renteria, the research builds on a common assumption that snoring and sleep apnea are hereditary conditions. Up until now, this has largely been ignored in favour of other lifestyle risk factors such as age, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption. "This is the first study which investigates on a large scale the genetic basis for the predisposition to snoring," said Dr Miguel Renteria. Notably, many of the genes identified have previously been linked with respiratory, cardio-metabolic, neurological and psychiatric traits. The findings were drawn from the DNA profiles of roughly 150,000 snorers and more than 250,000 individuals who do not suffer with any respiratory difficulties during sleep. The full study has been published in the journal Nature Communications. It is entirely possible that from generations of sleeping on a flat bed, we are now witnessing the effects of gravity on our biological evolution. At Superior Lifestyle, we are deeply passionate about our electric beds which are designed to alleviate symptoms associated with common health issues such as sleep apnea. But before we discuss how, it's worth understanding this issue in more detail. What is sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is the repeated obstruction of the upper airway during sleep and ranges from mild to severe cases. It occurs where a person's tongue or airway muscles relax causing a partial or complete blockage of airflow. A patient with sleep apnea can stop breathing for up to 90 seconds before their brain registers a drop in oxygen levels and sends a small wake-up call. This will prompt the person to gasp, snort, toss and turn or wake up from their slumber. In most cases, it is a subconcious reaction and the person is completely oblivious to their condition. This is terrifying when you consider the fact that victims of sleep apnea are exposed to a heightened risk of mortality, type-2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It also increases the chances of being involved in a motor vehicle or workplace accident due to poor concentration, fatigue and mood swings. The condition is perhaps more common than we think, affecting over 775,000 Australians and many more that are unaccounted for. According to Deloitte Access Economics, this costs our economy approximately $5.1 billion each year comprising of healthcare costs and productivity losses. So what treatment is available? Over the years, there have been a variety of inventions from mouth guards to invasive CPAP machines and other wearables that purport to improve a person's quality of sleep. Besides being extremely uncomfortable and in the case of surgery quite expensive, these devices do not guarantee any success and are often abandoned by their user. The truth is no single treatment will work for everyone and as always, it is worth consulting with your doctor before making a decision. However, there is one solution that is often left out of the conversation despite its efficacy. For many people who live each day with the foggy-headed side effects of sleep apnea, our adjustable beds have helped them get a well rested night and improve their quality of life. How can we help? If you're experiencing broken sleep or waking up feeling drowsy and lethargic, you are likely to find some relief in one of our adjustable beds and pressure relieving memory foam mattresses. Don't just hear it from us, hear it from one of our long-standing clients, Rozanne Oliff (above). Shortly after purchasing her adjustable bed, Rozanne was able to banish her sleep apnea machine and increase her sleep performance drastically. If you interested in finding out more, give us a call on 1300 825 931 to speak with one of friendly Sleep Specialists. Quick Links: Superior Beds & Mattresses Buyer Beware! • Buyer Beware! Couple share painful ordeal with TV Shop

In a candid testimonial, Ross describes his remorse and regret after cancelling his order with Superior Lifestyle, on the promise of a "free 30 day trial" with TV Shop. In hindsight, Ross can't be blamed. He didn't even get a chance to read the fine print before he was bound to his purchase. The innocent victim? Ross's wife Yvonne, who at 152cm tall, found herself trapped between the encatchment that outrageously appeared when elevating their TV Shop bed. When the couple sought to return the bed, they were forced to jump through numerous hoops and slapped with exorbitant fees that left them out of pocket by almost $2,000. Within a matter of days, Ross was on the phone with us asking for our help to return his purchase. We were more than happy to assist Ross and his wife, who have kindly shared their experience during this ordeal in the letter below. This review serves as an important reminder to players in the market for an adjustable bed. For the very best in comfort, quality and customer care, choose Superior Lifestyle. Ross and Yvonne Stuart 402/42 Queen Street Kings Beach QLD 4551 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Ross Stuart and I am writing to express my experience with Superior Lifestyle. I was initially invited by Superior Lifestyle to an in-home consultation on how to stay mobile and independent in your own home. We were greeted by a lovely gentleman named Greg Hyslop and expressed an interest in the products because my wife, Yvonne, suffers with osteo-arthritis and I suffer from mild to acute pain in my lower back and neck. The way the technology works is something I had never seen before. The device generates a cyclonic motion to deeply sooth and relieve muscle tension, and is significantly more comforting than most traditional massagers. Almost immediately after the demonstration, Yvonne was walking with less pain in her shoulders and knees. Being older in age, we decided to invest in an electric massage bed, which is where we spend a lot of our time. Shortly after our visit from Greg, we came across a TV advertisement offering a similar sort of electric bed with a “Free 30 Day Trial”. We foolishly cancelled our order with Superior Lifestyle and placed an order with TV Shop, on the basis of the “free trial”. Needless to say, we regretted our decision as the bed that was delivered was incredibly poor in design and quality. To give you an example, Yvonne (being less than 152cm tall) found herself trapped in the bed whenever the head and legs were elevated, meaning there was no practical benefit or support from these features. The massage vibration was also quite aggressive and therefore unlikely to be used. We invited Greg Hyslop to come and inspect the purchase we had made and were delighted to hear that Superior Lifestyle would assist us in returning the bed to TV Shop. You see, the Free 30 Day Trial advertised on TV is not exactly “free”. After being palmed off from one company representative to the next, we were forced to pay for the cost of delivery, the cost of returning the bed and a further cancellation fee. It pays to read the fine print as with most things in life you can never be too careful… but in this instance, we weren’t given a fair or proper chance to read the terms and conditions! We were left out of pocket with our purchase from TV Shop, but I am pleased to say that our experience with Superior Lifestyle has been wonderful and the quality of their beds are next to none. The difference between the two companies are like chalk and cheese with Superior Lifestyle offering an electric bed of hospital standard. Every step of the way, Superior Lifestyle were professional, diligent and committed to helping us achieve a better quality of life through deep sleep. I would recommend Superior Lifestyle to anybody in the market for an adjustable bed and caution you against those companies out there looking to make a quick buck! Yours sincerely, Ross and Yvonne Stuart

With each passing day, we learn more and more about our customers and the powerful impact our products have on their general wellbeing. That's why we're out to help all Australians achieve greater mobility and independence in their daily lives. With the NDIS, this becomes even easier! From electric beds and pressure-relieving mattresses to massage chairs and cyclonic vibration therapy, all of our products offer a variety of health benefits and are Class 1A Medical Devices, listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (307512). Donna Joseph from Gordon Park, Queensland, obtained her electric bed through the NDIS and recently shared her experience with us below: "I have suffered for a very long time with back, body and leg pains from osteoarthritis, joint pain, headaches and restless legs. Sometimes I would wake up crying in the middle of the night from so much pain and have to sleep with pillows under my legs and my head just to get some kind of relief. Since having this wonderful, comfortable bed, it's been like sleeping on a cloud. With the massage vibration, I generally fall asleep once my head hits the pillow. I am no longer waking up in the middle of the night and I've been getting up in the mornings less cranky because I've slept like a baby. I highly recommend this company and this therapeutic bed to anyone in need of deep sleep!" • Victims of the Australian bushfires receive donated beds

In our last blog post, we pledged to help families get back on their feet following the devastating bushfires affecting the nation. As news broke this morning of the 72 homes lost to unforgiving bushfires, we were able to secure the first recipients of our bed and mattress donation drive. Carmen Walsh and her six grandchildren (pictured below) lost their home in Central Queensland to bushfires earlier this month. Carmen was first brought to our attention through Red Cross Australia and GIVIT (a national not-for-profit organisation that connects people in need with willing donors). Shortly, we will dispatch a total of seven beds and mattresses to support Carmen and her family during this difficult time. Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts to mitigate the impact of the #AustralianBushfires around the country. If you know somebody affected by the bushfires and in need of a bed, please don't hesitate to contact us on info@superiorlifestyle.com.au. Update: Our donated beds and mattresses left our depot on 14 January 2020 and were received shortly thereafter. We would like to thank Northline Freight Logistics for their support in helping us move these items across the country.
