What is Spina Bifida?
Spina bifida is a birth defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord and its meninges are exposed through a gap in the backbone.
It occurs when a baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly in the womb and is known to vary in severity.
For most people, surgery is an option to close the opening in the spine. However, it is often too late to prevent damage to the nervous system which leads to a variety of symptoms including:
weakness or paralysis of the lower limbs,
bowel incontinence and urinary incontinence,
loss of skin sensation in the lower limbs, and
learning difficulties.
It is an incredibly difficult disability to live with, as the spinal cord forms part of the body's central nervous system — it is the pathway for messages sent by the brain to the body and back again.
